In April 1968, at the urging of President Lyndon B. Johnson, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1968 commonly know as the Fair Housing Act, one week after the assassination of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. When the Fair Housing Act of 1968 was first enacted, it prohibited discrimination only on the basis of race, color, religion, sex and national origin. It was expanded in 1974 to include gender and again in 1988 to protect people with disabilities and families with children. The Fair Rent Commission City of New Haven is the municipal department which administers and enforces the Fair Housing Act for the City of New Haven. Individuals who feel they have experienced housing discrimination can file a complaint with the Fair Rent Commission Fair Housing Program.
