The City of New Haven is celebrating Week of the Young Child with nine reading events over six days designed to encourage a love of books and reading among preschool children and their parents. The events will be at various venues throughout the city including a City Seed farmer’s market, the New Haven Public Library, Edgewood Park, and the Leitner Planetarium. They will be from Sunday, April 10 through Saturday, April 16. All events, which include a cello concert, a nature walk and a visit to Eli Whitney Museum, are free and feature books related to the activity or subject. Children will receive a free book at each event. Children will hear The Little Read book, Whoever You Are/Quienquiera que seas, and take home a copy for their home library. Tuesday, April 12 7:00 pm and 8:00 pm IBEX: Search for the Edge of the Solar System See the sun journey thru the Milky Way Leitner Family Planetarium @Yale University 355 Prospect Street Experience the stars and the sun at the Leitner Family Planetarium and take home a book about the planets, The Planets in Our Solar System; to celebrate the sky’s the limit during Week of the Young Child! Visit the Children’s Museum all afternoon and then attend our Creating Readers program at 2:00 pm where a local musician will be playing This Jazz Man with the children singing along! In April 1968, at the urging of President Lyndon B. Johnson, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1968 commonly know as the Fair Housing Act, one week after the assassination of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. When the Fair Housing Act of 1968 was first enacted, it prohibited discrimination only on the basis of race, color, religion, sex and national origin. It was expanded in 1974 to include gender and again in 1988 to protect people with disabilities and families with children. The Fair Rent Commission City of New Haven is the municipal department which administers and enforces the Fair Housing Act for the City of New Haven. Individuals who feel they have experienced housing discrimination can file a complaint with the Fair Rent Commission Fair Housing Program. Green Tip of the Week: Help New Haven achieve its goal of planting 5,000 trees in the city within the next five years by signing up for the city to plant a tree in your neighborhood free of charge.
